FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What age does a child need to be to board at Caxton College?
We accept boarding students from 11 to 18 years of age. However we do consider children younger than 11, for more information you can consult our admissions department.

Do they have to stay for a whole school year?
No. They can stay for any amount of time, from one month to a year or more, the same applies to our boarding service during summer school.

How much experience does the school have with boarding?
In 1998 Caxton College created the option of boarding to meet the demmand of international students who wanted to study at the school. Since then, it has looked after students from all corners of the globe, both in the school year and during summer: Brasil, Russia, Germany, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Japan, France, Romania, Albania, Belarus, USA...

Is there an international environment at the school?
Yes. 20% of our pupils are from other countries. In addition 80% of our teaching faculty is British creating a multicultural setting where both English and Spanish are spoken.

Do students need to have studied the British curriculum before in order to study at Caxton College?
No, it is not necessary. However, given that our pupils have a high academic level they take exams to determine their level (in English, Maths and Science) to see how well they will adapt or whether or not they need support in certain areas.
In fact the school has a special adaptation program for new students which includes support classes as well as with specific subjects such as languages be it Spanish or English.

What information about the pupil does the admissions department need?
When applying, we ask that you present us with a document from their previous school containing grades from the last two years for us to use as a reference.

What procedures or permits are necessary to study in Spain?
Students who are European citizens have the right to enter, leave and stay within Spanish territory. All they need is their national identity document or passport in order to move freely.
Students, who come from outside the European Union, should apply for a student visa at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence. When you receive the visa, the school can then begin to ask for a student resident card which is obligatory when staying in Spain.

Who deals with this?
The admissions department will help you with any process needed for a pupil’s stay in Spain, issuing all the appropriate documentation.

Is medical insurance needed?
The admissions department will also help you apply for medical insurance. However, if the country of residence is within the European Union, we recommend that you ask for a ‘European Health Insurance Card’ which gives medical cover in all EU countries.
In addition Caxton College has a large range of medical services that are also available for our boarding students.

What universities could students attend upon completing there studies at Caxton College?
Pupils at Caxton College are prepared to study at any university in the world, thanks to their high academic performance.
Many of our students stay to study here in Spain and others enrol at universities in Britain, United States...or their country of origin.

Can you meet the future host family?
Of course! If you come for a visit of the school, we can arrange a meeting with the host family so you can get to know them personally and see the home where your child will stay.

What if a child has certain allergies or specific dietary requirements?
All staff at the school, in the clinic, kitchen, dining room and host families are informed about specific situations when certain pupils require a lot of care.
In the dining room, for example, they prepare specific dishes for lactose intolerants, celiacs, those with nut allergies, vegetarians as well as for those with specific diets because of religion. The host family also respects the needs of the child in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

What happens during school holidays?
In school holiday periods such as Christmas, Easter or summer, international students usually return home to enjoy the time with their families. If for a certain reason they might want to stay in Spain, they need to make sure the host family is notified in advance. However, given that this time is not thought of as part of their ‘stay’ with the host family, there will be an additional charge.
